Door won't close? Check the eyes first.

The photo-eye sensors at the base of your tracks are the door's safety system — and the number-one reason a door refuses to close. Misaligned, dirty, sun-blinded or dead, they stop the door by design.

Technician aligning garage door safety sensors at the track base

What the sensors do

Since 1993, openers must have photo-eye sensors: an infrared beam across the opening, about six inches off the floor. Break the beam and the door won't close — or reverses if it's moving. They're why a door protects kids, pets and car bumpers, and they are never to be bypassed, taped over or disabled.

The failure patterns

The opener light blinks and the door won't close from the remote (holding the wall button works — that's the tell). One eye's LED is out or flickering: a knocked bracket, a cut wire at the staple line, corrosion in our wet climate, or a dead eye. Both eyes lit but the door still refuses at one time of day: direct sun on the receiving eye, a real pattern on west-facing garages. Misalignment by millimeters is enough — a broom handle can do it.

What we do

Realign and secure the brackets so they stay aligned, repair or re-run damaged sensor wiring, clean and test the lenses, and replace failed eyes with the correct type for your opener brand. Then the full safety test: beam-break reversal and the contact reverse test, both demonstrated before we leave. If the 'sensor fault' turns out to be the opener's logic board, we'll show you that too.

Questions, answered straight

Can I just hold the wall button to close it?

That works as a one-time get-it-closed — holding the button overrides the eyes for that close. But it also overrides their protection, so it's a workaround for tonight, not a fix. The door needs its eyes back.

One sensor light is green, the other is off. What's that mean?

The lit one has power; the dark one is either not receiving the beam (alignment), not getting power (wiring), or dead. All three are quick to distinguish at the visit.

Can any sensor go on any opener?

No — sensors are brand- and era-specific in their wiring and signals. We fit the correct eyes for your opener.
